Young People Discover the Power of Public Budgets in Advancing Nutrition and Climate Action

On 5 October 2026, the Nutrition Alliance for Planetary Health and Budgets (NAPHBUT), in partnership with the Big 5 Center organization brought together young people in Komarock, Embakasi Central, for a training on public budget advocacy for nutrition and climate change. The session, led by our director Ms. Vivian Magero helped participants understand how Nairobi County budgets are developed, approved and implemented, and how young people can participate in decisions that affect their communities. Through practical examples, participants explored budget calendars, public participation opportunities and ways to hold decision makers and elected leaders accountable.Discussions also highlighted community concerns around nutrition, flooding, drought and access to essential services. This helped reinforce the importance of budgets that respond to local needs. The training marked an important step towards equipping young people, including teenage mothers and youth from disadvantaged families with the knowledge and confidence to advocate for their communities. NAPHBUT looks forward to building on this foundation through continued learning, mentorship and practical budget analysis. When young people understand public budgets, they can help shape decisions that matter within their communities.
