Budget Advocacy, Food Waste Reduction and Circular Economy

A capacity-building session was held for community members in Kayole Central, Embakasi Sub-county, focusing on residents from low-income settlements. The day's theme was "Food Wastage and Circular Economy". The program began with an introduction and an overview of NAPHBUT's mission and the Nexus between Nutrition, Planetary Health and Budgets. Sessions included discussions on budget advocacy, emphasizing community involvement in national budgeting and its impact on nutrition and planetary health. The importance of individual and community knowledge in budget planning was highlighted, stressing that every citizen has a role to play in curbing corruption and ensuring fair resource allocation. Further sessions addressed food waste in planetary health and sustainable food systems, emphasizing the need for reducing, collecting, segregating, and recycling food waste to produce natural manure, reduce chemical use, and improve food safety and community health. Traditional food preservation methods were also discussed to minimize waste and ensure food security, especially for households without refrigeration. A practical training on food waste recycling was a highlight, demonstrating how to make potato soap and avocado    session aimed to promote economic empowerment, reduce food waste, and improve hygiene affordably to reduce preventable infections. A guest from Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN CSA Kenya) also delivered a talk on economic empowerment through food waste recycling and environmental sanitation. The event concluded with a vote of thanks and a commitment from members to all ensure they practice the new skills taught.
